Chelsea crumble to a painful defeat to City at Stamford Bridge

City players celebrate their goal
A 67th minute Kevin De Bruyne’s goal was all Manchester City needed to defeat Chelsea on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
Kevin de Bruyne collected a pass in space. There is a one-two on the edge of the box with Gabriel Jesus. Then it’s just a fantastic drive past Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal, on his left foot. The net ripples with glee.
Pep Guardiola’s side made it eight consecutive wins in all competitions and dominated for long periods against Chelsea, whose limited attacking intent was further compromised by top scorer Alvaro Morata limping off in the 35th minute with an apparent left hamstring injury.
An exemplary showing from the home defence, in which Andreas Christensen was outstanding, meant City struggled for a regular flow of clear-cut chances despite their superiority.
That was until De Bruyne seized the moment, something his game-breaking goal against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek demonstrated he is increasingly adept at doing.
Goal.com reports that the Belgium midfielder collected a return pass from Gabriel Jesus in the 67th minute before unleashing an unerring left-footed finish from outside the area.
The result places City ahead of Manchester United at the summit on goal difference, although their advantage in that regard was slashed to one by Jose Mourinho’s men thumping lowly Crystal Palace earlier on Saturday.
Chelsea are fourth, six points off the pace heading into the October international break.
Conte preferred Cesar Azpilicueta to the more attack-minded Victor Moses at right-wing back but the Spain defender was involved when Chelsea crafted the game’s first opening in the third minute.
Azpilicueta played in N’Golo Kante down the right channel and the midfielder’s clipped cross was glanced over by Morata.
Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois restarted with a short goalkick in the 12th minute and dallied after receiving possession back. He was fortunate to see a clearance thud into City striker Jesus and go over the crossbar.
City were dominating possession but needed a brave headed clearance from Nicolas Otamendi in the 26th minute as Antonio Rudiger’s cross threatened the near post, and Ederson scrambled to deny Azpilicueta on the follow-up.
The visitors sprung up the other end in slick fashion, only for Raheem Sterling to float a cross too far in front of Jesus and David Silva, who were queuing up to finish.
Silva took matters into his own hands as Courtois thwarted a stinging drive at his near post, before the Spain playmaker saw one of his compatriots in the opposition line-up depart early.
Willian’s introduction in place of Morata meant Chelsea were operating without a recognised striker and City continued to make most of the running in attacking terms, with Courtois reacting magnificently to keep out Fernandinho’s 44th-minute header.
Guardiola’s men continued to zip precise passes around after the restart, with the Chelsea defence increasingly well-manned.
Sterling hooked a left-footed volley over in the 54th minute – a rare instance of an attacker finding space inside the home penalty area.
City’s defence switched off and were bailed out by Ederson after the hour passed, the Brazilian denying Eden Hazard on the end of Cesc Fabregas’ cleverly disguised free-kick.
Silva’s decision to take a touch on the end of Sterling’s 66th-minute cutback proved his undoing before he touched another ball from the England winger away from Jesus’ path.
It fell to De Bruyne to give his fellow playmaker a lesson in how to be clinical when he lashed beyond countryman Courtois.
Conte sent on Michy Batshuayi and Pedro in place of Hazard and Tiemoue Bakayoko to chase an equaliser but it was City who almost embellished a stirring victory when Rudiger headed Jesus’ volley off the line in the 85th minute.

Mourinho reveals why he can’t rest Lukaku yet

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has said that he cannot rest goal machine Romelu Lukaku, until Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns to the squad.
Ibrahimovic is out until January 2018, as he continues to recover from a knee injury.
Lukaku has hit the ground running at Old Trafford, scoring 10 goals in his first nine United matches, since his £75million move from Everton last summer.
Mourinho admits he cannot rotate the 24-year-old yet.
“Without Zlatan we can’t rotate the strikers.
“Also because Marcus Rashford is playing in other postions.

Kenny Ogungbe Describes Psquare Fight As Publicity Stunt

Psquare – Kenny Ogungbe
Nigerian Veteran broadcaster, Kenny Ogungbe has dismissed the latest brouhaha between Africa’s favourite twins, Psquare Peter and Paul Okoye as a publicity stunt.
You recall Peter and Paul Okoye have been trending all week after Peter announced they were parting ways and a video of the twins fighting each other went viral.
Speaking on his Kennis Music Radio last Wednesday, Kenny Ogungbe popularly known as Baba Keke, said the latest Okoye family feud is nothing but mere publicity stunt.
“I am sure they have a massive show coming up in December and they are using this as a publicity stunt. They have over 100 songs and people who called us on the radio within 15 minutes, requested for about 29 of their songs.
“If you are breaking up after recording about 100 songs, will you break up to record another big song as a solo artiste? At what age? How many songs are they going to release that would be up to what they have released already? At what age do they want to do that when people are interested in listening to songs released by younger artistes?
Quote me anywhere that I said it is a game. In the video that was released online, Paul said it was a shame to Peter. It is a game (laughs). Quote me anywhere that I said that it is a game but if they don’t get back together, good luck to them,” he said.

Inadequate funding, bane of higher education – UI VC

New UI VC Prof Idowu Olayinka
Gbenro Adesina/Ibadan
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, UI, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka has identified inadequate funding as the main problem confronting higher education in Nigeria, stressing that government must properly fund universities to be globally competitive.
Olayinka who stated this on MITV said that quality education comes with sufficient cash, adding, “What stops UI from recruiting a Professor of Mechanical Engineering from Harvard University to come and be teaching our students in Ibadan? But can we pay his salary? Will he be willing to come and be contending with all these money-induced incessant strike?
“What makes a world-class university is the quality of human resources. How many foreign lecturers and foreign students can Nigerian universities attract with our poor infrastructure and conditions? I think we need to invest heavily in education if we must be globally competitive”.
Also identifying access and quality as problems, Olayinka pointed out that public universities were the most heavily subscribed options by the teeming candidates over state and privately owned universities because of cost, but regretted that public universities lacked adequate space to accommodate all the candidates.
According to him, “10,000 candidates applied to study Medicine and Surgery in UI, but we can only admit 150 because of space, we would have loved to admit more than 150 but because we don’t want to compromise the quality that we are producing. If there is money, we can expand the scope, build more hostels and classrooms”.
On the incessant strike rocking the sector, Olayinka linked the problem to the same issue of funding, noting that the staff became restful because the salary was “amputated “, maintaining that this was one of the reasons Nigerian youth run to Ghana and other neighbouring countries to study.
The UI boss argued that most of the foreign universities being attended by Nigerian youth were not relatively better than Nigerian universities, but because “there is a stable academic calendar over there, they attract our youth who want to complete their studies on record time.”
He said that public primary and secondary schools had virtually collapsed in the country because they were not well taken-care of, as many parents now send their children to private primary and secondary schools.
Olayinka insisted that education was not cheap as someone had to pick up the bills, thereby calling on all stakeholders to join hands in order to save education sector.

Harry Kane hits brace as Tottenham put four goals past Huddersfield

Kane scored one of his goals
Harry Kane bettered his own record for goals scored in a calendar month as his double strike helped Tottenham to a comfortable win at Huddersfield.
The 24-year-old has now scored 13 goals for club and country in September, as Huddersfield became the fifth club side to suffer at the hands of the England marksman this month.
He delivered his first blow inside 10 minutes when he collected Kieran Trippier’s header, ran into the Huddersfield area before slotting past keeper Jonas Lossl.
It was then 2-0 soon after. This time Ben Davies demonstrated his poise in front of goal with a good strike after great combination play from Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.
The goal of the match came barely midway into the half. Kane was again fed by Trippier before he drifted across the 18-yard area and bent a brilliant effort past the Danish keeper.
Spurs eased off after the break but still managed a fourth when substitute Moussa Sissoko claimed his first for the club with a deflected effort from close range.
BBC Sports reports that Laurent Depoitre’s strike that hit the crossbar, and Tommy Smith’s fierce shot, which produced a good save from Hugo Lloris, were Huddersfield’s only chances of note.
Spurs move up to third in the Premier League and Huddersfield are in 10th.
His 13 goals in a month equals the best efforts of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (13 in March 2012) and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (13 in October 2010). If this form continues, he, like the other two, will be considered for and might even win the most coveted prizes in world football.
The two strikes against the Terriers once again highlighted his all-around abilities as a striker.
The first was about anticipation and coping with a one-on-one situation. Trippier’s header should have been cleared by Chris Lowe, but with Kane breathing down his neck, the defender missed his kick and the striker pounced. The England man then waited for the right moment before threading his strike past Lossl.
The second was spectacular. It was the kind of effort that team-mate Eriksen would produce, but this time it was Kane with the stunning strike after he made space for himself near the edge of the area.
After 11 games last season Kane had scored six goals – it is almost double that this campaign.

DNA Centre: No more hiding place for wife-beater, rapists – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode (3rd left); Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem (2nd left); Executive Director, Women’s Rights & Health Programme, Mrs. Bose Ironsi (left); Alternate Chairman, Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), Mrs. Clara Omotilewa Ibirogba (3rd right), members of DSVRT, Mrs. Omolola Rotimi (2nd right); Mrs. Alaba Fadairo (right); Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP. Dolapo Badmos (3rd right behind) and others during the DSVRT courtesy visit to the Governor, at the Lagos House, Ikeja, on Friday.Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday expressed optimism that the new DNA Forensic Centre of the State Government would go a long way in ensuring that perpetrators of domestic violence and sexual crimes are punished in line with the provision of the law.
Ambode, who spoke at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja when he received members of the State’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,
Adeniji Kazeem, said apart from being part of the comprehensive justice sector reform plan, the DNA Forensic Centre would complement efforts of such agencies like the DSVRT to rid the State of sexual abuses and domestic violence crimes.
The governor, who recalled a recent case involving the rape of a three-year-old girl which was thrown out by the Court for lack of evidence, said the DNA Centre, which is the first of its kind in West Africa, would henceforth eliminate such incidences, as there would now be solid evidence to back up such cases.
He said: “Just few days back, we commissioned the DNA and Forensic Lab Centre in Lagos and many thought we could not do it because in the past, there have been efforts to do it but because of the huge cost implication, they could not.
“We were so determined that we were going to do something about justice reform and we have to do it in totality and setting up that DNA Centre means we have given a veritable vehicle for DSVRT and others to pursue the dream which is to rid the State of the societal ill.
“With that, we are saying that we are ready to back everything that the Team is doing because it is not enough for us to get victims rescued, we should also be able to put up measures to punish perpetrators and by setting up the DNA Centre, it is more or less to complement what the Team is doing.”
While commending DSVRT members for their efforts in promoting and championing the fight against domestic and sexual violence in the State, the governor said it was gratifying that the advocacy and efforts were not only helping to reduce the menace but also making more people to come out to report such cases.
He said: “I enjoy the fact that the advocacy has really worked. When we started, I hear comments like is this what Ambode should be concentrating on, he should go and do roads. But we are on our way to stop issues that relate to domestic abuse and sexual violence.
“This is a societal ill that does no one any good, it distorts the productivity of a city; it reduces the GDP of this economy; it looks very fluid but it is very critical. That is the message we are sending. For everyone freed from this, we increase productivity by almost double and then if it becomes an attitude, it then means that we have done something for this society.
“This is one silent project. It does not look like the Ajah Bridge neither does it look like Third Mainland Bridge but it’s one key area through which we can touch our people positively.”
Ambode also called for more institutions and volunteers to join the fight against all forms of sexual and domestic abuses.
Earlier, the Attorney General, who is the Chairman of DSVRT, said the Team was at Lagos House as part of activities marking the one-month long awareness against domestic and sexual violence crimes, to appreciate the support and commitment of Governor Ambode to issues relating to the fight against the menace.
Kazeem recalled the all-male walk led by Ambode last year against domestic and sexual crimes, saying that the initiative of the State Government against the menace was now being copied by almost all the States of the federation.

Federal Govt advises civil servants on regular exercises

Winifred Oyo-Ita
The Federal Government has advised civil servants to embrace regular exercise so as to be physically and mentally fit to discharge their duties efficiently.
The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, gave the advice at the monthly jogging exercise for civil servants in Abuja on Saturday.
Oyo-Ita, represented by Mrs Georgina Ehurial, Director, Cabinet Affairs Office, said that the monthly exercise was good for their healthy living, urging the civil servants not to be pushed every month to participate.
According to her, regular exercises should be part of our daily routine in order to be physically fit, mentally strong and enjoy healthy living at all times.
She said that physical exercise would reduce cases of sudden deaths in the country, urging civil servants and Nigerians to make the exercise a regular discipline to burn calories in the body.
“Productivity depends on the state of the body. You need to be fit for effective and efficient discharge of duties in your place of work.
“Do not allow anybody to either force or push you into coming out every month to participate in the exercise because you are doing it for yourself.
“I urge you all to make use of your various office gyms once in a week to embark on exercise after a very hectic work in the office,” she said.
However, she enjoined those who were not part of the monthly exercise to avail themselves this opportunity of benefiting from this laudable gesture.
Dr Rufus Ebegba, the Man of this month’s exercise, also urged civil servants to take the exercise seriously, adding that the exercise is important for effective productivity.
Ebegba, who is the Director-General, National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), expressed his agency’s continued participation in the monthly routine.
He said this was the first time his agency was participating in the monthly exercise and urged civil servants to unite by putting in their best for the progress of the country.
The monthly jogging exercise ended with a football match between the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

57th Independence: Ekweremadu urges Nigerians to be patient, optimistic

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has urged Nigerians to be patient and optimistic, as the country would surely overcome her challenges.
Ekweremadu made the call in his message to Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s 57th independence anniversary.
He said that although Nigeria was bedeviled by a myriad of challenges, with a positive mindset and leadership, the country would spring back to reckoning as a true giant of Africa and realise the dreams of the founding fathers.
The lawmaker said: “I am an optimist. As a matter of principle, I prefer to see the positive sides of life without also overlooking the problems also.
“At 57, we have no doubt, had our challenges as a nation. But we have also made progress. We survived a civil war to remain one country.
“The important thing also is that Nigeria remains a nation with unbeatable potentials. All we need is the right attitude and leadership to translate our potentials to greatness.
“Our greatest challenge at the moment is not the economic hardship, biting as it is. Our greatest problem is disunity and disaffection because the country has never been this divided. We need a leadership that sees every part of the country as its constituency, irrespective of different political, ethnic and religious leanings.
“We need a leadership that does justice and equity to all to be able to galvanise and re-launch the nation to the pinnacle of glory. Equity should be tall enough to see the high and far and short enough to see the lowly and weak. Am sure that with that, Nigeria will fly again”.
Ekweremadu, however, emphasised that all those would not happen overnight and therefore sued for patience, prayer, love, unity, and positive attitude among the citizenry.

“Me and her out of everybody , like, you know, had the coolest bond, I feel…” he added. “I mean, guy-girl bond.”
The 35-year-old, whose real name is Justin Brescia, told E! News last week that his first reaction to news of Patridge’s split from Bohan was to think of the child involved.
“Me, coming from a separated family at a young age, it had its perks and it had its hindrances,” he said. “My second thought is if she’s okay, because she’s been a longtime friend. My thoughts and my heart go out to her and her little one at this time.”

Jennifer Garner Posts Makeup-Free Photo After Surviving Her Kids' 'Yes Day'

Jennifer Garner survived “Yes Day” — with a little help from her good friend coffee.
The actress, 45, posted a sleepy, makeup-free selfie on Friday from the inside of a tent, announcing that she was in the midst of a “Yes Day” — a family tradition in which the parents indulge all their kids wishes (within reason). This is the fifth year Garner has celebrated the unofficial holiday.
“You’ll never need coffee more than the day after “Yes Day!” she captioned on Instagram. Along with a series of hashtags explaining that she and the kids had slept in a tent in the backyard. She added that “coffee” is her “Yes Day.”
Garner has three kids — Violet, 11, Seraphina, 8 and Samuel, 5,   — with Ben Affleck. The duo broke off their 10-year marriage in June of 2015, and officially filed for divorce in April.

The family outing comes a week after Garner celebrated her father, William “Bill” Garner’s, birthday on social media, posting a sweet video montage on Instagram showing photos of the two and their family.
“My dad’s birthday = the 21st night of September = #earthwindandfireday,” the actress wrote, quoting the lyric of the Earth Wind & Fire song, which also played in the background of the clip. “We always knew you were the coolest, Dad! Happy Birthday!”
Fans of the actress may recognize her father from his appearance in her 2016 Capital One ad — made, she said in honor of “Bring Your Father to Work Day.”

While Kardashian West finally confirmed her exciting baby news in the reality show’s trailer, the show did not address two other big baby bombshells — Kylie Jenner and Khloé are both pregnant.
Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE on Friday that Jenner, 20, is expecting a baby girl with her boyfriend Travis Scott. She is due in February.
Days after Kylie’s news broke, sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Khloé is also expecting a baby, her first child with her boyfriend, NBA star Tristan Thompson.
PEOPLE previously reported that Kim and Kanye had hired a surrogate in June and earlier this month it was revealed that the surrogate was pregnant.
“The entire family is over the moon. Kim had been looking for a surrogate for months until recently when she found the perfect candidate,” a source said at the time.

4 Ways to Expertly Mix and Match Color and Pattern

how to mix colors and patterns
Ah, color and pattern, two shortcuts to make your outfits pop when your look starts feeling a little boring and dreary. For a lot of guys, though, figuring out how to wear different colors and patterns together can be a major challenge.
We totally get it – with all the possible combinations, where do you even start? Isn’t it just easier to stick to those tried and true neutrals?!
We’re confident you look great in those neutrals—who doesn’t?—but here at Style Girlfriend we believe you’re never too young (or old!) to start broadening your style horizons. Just remember, “Audentes Fortuna iuvat,” fortune favors the bold.
Today we’re sharing four tips to help you add more color and pattern to your style effortlessly. Ready to take your look to new levels? Here we go:
1. Adjust the Intensities
how to mix colors and patterns
Jacket: ASOS, $56 | Shirt: Pull&Bear, $29 | Pants: ASOS, $48 | Beanie: ASOS, $8
Backpack: ASOS, $29 | Boots: Selected Homme, $95
Wear it well: The freshman move when it comes to colors? Matching your jacket, shirt, socks, and shoes with the exact same color. For a more harmonious, yet still interesting, look, tweak the intensity slightly of hues in each piece.
Pair a dark army green bomber jacket, for instance, with a greyish olive chelsea boot. Rock a mustard yellow sweater without looking like a walking yield sign by pairing it with darker tan chinos. Or do like we did here, mixing together a beanie, shirt, and boots that all have hints of red and brown. Adjusting the intensity is the easiest way to seamlessly mix colors, and that’s why it’s the first place we recommend you start!
2. Mix your Patterns
how to mix patterns
Jacket: ASOS, $44 | Sweater: ASOS, $40 | Shirt: Pretty Green, $111 | Jeans: ASOS, $45
Socks:ASOS, $10 | Sneakers: Adidas Stan Smiths, $90 | Backpack: ASOS, $40
Wear it well: Steal this classic tip from suit and tie-type guys. Mix. Your. Patterns. After all, a striped tie can get lost when paired with a striped shirt, but a pin dot tie and a striped shirt? Now we’re talking.
Put your own casual spin on this corporate move by making sure there’s at least one thing that separates your patterns apart. Don’t be afraid to pair two different prints (like we did with the stripe sweater over a dot print shirt), mix different colors (like a red check scarf with a grey stripe sweater), or experiment with scale (more on this next!).
3. Play with Scale
how to mix patterns for men
(clockwise from top left) Check Shirt: ASOS, $45 | T-Shirt: River Island, $10
Camo shirt: ASOS, $38  | Sweatshirt: ASOS, $32
Shirt: ASOS, $35 | Pants: Sisley, $82 | Sweater: ASOS, $48 | Scarf: Barts, $56
Wear it well: Patterns that are the same size can compete for attention, so mix up the scale to help with the contrast.
Give the thick plaid check some room to breathe by opting for a thin striped shirt. Busy prints like camo can be balanced out with a large color blocked sweatshirt. We’ve seen lots of patterned pants, bags, and scarves for guys this fall, so don’t limit your bold style moves to just tops, either!
4. When in doubt, add a neutral
mixing neutrals with patterns
Coat: ASOS, $127 | Sweater: Bellfield, $38
Pants:Heart & Dagger, $79 | Shoes: ASOS, $79

Wear it well: Worried your mix of colors or patterns is too busy? Ground your look with a solid neutral colored piece. Neutrals (black, navy, white, gray, olive, and tan/brown) match with everything because they’re not overpowering (hence the name!).
Having at least one solid neutral colored item in your outfit, like your shirt, jacket, or pants, will break up the bolder parts of your outfit and give those colors and pattern some space to do their own thing. So if you’re, say, putting together a color blocked sweater with some plaid check pants, reach for a solid camel tan coat to make the whole thing work just right.

Style Tips for College Guys (From Those Who’ve Been There)

My college style was unabashedly terrible but definitely unafraid to experiment with different looks. It took me a long time to find my personal style…and today I’m beyond proud of the boring outfits I sport on a daily basis.

Shop Cash’s styleIntentional is not the first word that comes to mind when describing (most) college guys’ wardrobes. Questionably Clean, maybe. Within Arm’s Reach of the Bed this Morning, sure.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! Thinking now about your style will give you a well-clad leg up on your counterparts in your post-grad life. You’ll be pairing patterns like a pro and remixing your wardrobe better than a man twice your age if you start sorting this stuff out now. To help, I asked some of the most stylish guys I know for their wisdom.

Below, their style tips for college guys…and how to learn from their mistakes:

I say, experiment freely. Don’t be afraid to take chances and push the boundaries a bit. Get comfortable being uncomfortable when you look at yourself in the mirror. It’s only in doing that that you’re truly able to figure out what style best suits you.

Understand the principles of fit”

Barron Cuadro (menswear blogger, Effortless Gent)

I dressed better than the typical student in college because I wore shirts with actual collars, and I never wore sweatpants or flip flops in public. My main issue was fit. I wore everything entirely too big. It didn’t help that I was overweight, too. I believed that by wearing bigger clothes, I was hiding my size, but that definitely was not the case.
My style has evolved A LOT since then. For one, I dropped 60 lbs, so that helped. I understand the principles of fit much better, and I stick to a pretty simple color palette: lots of neutrals, a few rich, saturated colors during the winter months, and light colors during the summer months.
I’ve also adopted somewhat of a uniform that I wear most days: dark denim, OCBD, loafers, sport coat. I change it up here and there—linen shirts in the summer, chinos instead of denim, boots instead of loafers, M-65 instead of a sport coat—but I keep it pretty simple and stick to this same look, swapping out individual pieces when I get bored of the baseline uniform.
At the end of the day, having a killer look first comes down to understanding what fits well on you.
Men look like grown children when they wear oversized shirts, baggy jeans with extra fabric pooling at the ankles, cheap, bulky, square-toed shoes, etc. So figure out how to nail fit first, and everything else will easily fall into place.

By the way, your style and clothing preferences won’t be the same in 5 or 10 years… maybe not even in one year. I certainly don’t dress the same as I did in college (thank God); you probably won’t either.

“Be adventurous from time to time”

Jeff Laub (founder, Blind Barber)
jeff laub
My personal style in college was just “trying.” Looking back on it, I honestly don’t think I was ever comfortable in my clothes. You know, it was a time when I was finally away from home and trying to figure out who I wanted to be and what I wanted to feel like which meant a lot of trial and error…mostly error. From overly-faded jeans  to cowboy boots and a trucker hat with sweat bands, I was wearing whatever I thought was cool in everyone else’s eyes. Just trying to impress the babes you know?
Since then, my style has definitely evolved (thank god). I now understand that simple, well-fitting staples and a good pair of sneaks is the best way to feel great about yourself and get after the day with no second guessing. I realized that – for me – there’s nothing better than a pair of quality denim that fits your body (sometimes thanks to tailoring) and a simple pocket tee or button up.
Of course there are days when I am feeling a li’l wild and want to get loose, so I’ll throw on something that’s a bit out there, but the difference this time around is that I am doing it with purpose, emphasizing how I already feel about myself rather than trying to rock something to make me believe I am someone (or someone else). That make sense?
To guys in college now, get your uniform and don’t worry about the latest gear. There is too much for us to be doing in a day to be worried about getting dressed.

Once you have your staples, make sure they fit your body type. We all don’t come in Small, Medium, Large, etc.  Sometimes you have to hem the pants, adjust the sport coat so that it fits you properly. That is how you really make yourself look like a million bucks, the fit (not spending a million bucks on the name of the brand).
And finally, be adventurous from time to time. Yes I know this goes against my first rec, but to think we are going to be the same people, with the same interests, tastes and whatnot for the rest of our lives is crazy, so don’t ever quit exploring new ideas within yourself and your look. Just make sure if it looks super crazy you have that good pair of denim and white pocket tee to fall back on for the next date.

“Everything can be interchangeable”

Mick Batayske (DJ and entrepreneur)
Mick Batyske
My style was horrible. Jesus sandals in the snow. Oversized jeans. Ugly shirts. Horrible graphic tees.  Everything was really, really, bad…as you can see in this pic of me and De La Soul from the late 90’s (I’m the white guy). This was my first public deejay gig.

Today, guys should have a minimal wardrobe. Grey. Navy. Black. Pops of color with hats and sneakers. Lots of sweats and tailored pants. Button downs and sweaters. Everything can be interchangeable and effortless.

“If you take care of yourself…anything you wear will look at least decent”

Eric Cano (casting director)
Eric Cano
In college I went full-on bro in Abercrombie & Fitch, flips flops (gross) and Birkenstocks, shell necklaces, and these New Balance trail running sneakers that all the “cool kids” were wearing. My girlfriend at the time called me Ericrombie. I did, however, begin to start thrifting, which I still do to this day.
By the time I was a junior I had pretty much abandoned the prep look in favor of what was pretty close to “guido.” I remember going to Florence and Rome for spring break and spending all my money on these wrap-around Miu Miu shades and Prada sneakers. I wore my hair spiked up with this stuff called Murray’s Hair Wax that stayed in your hair for a week. I also went through an unfortunate period with a weird British rocker/ shag-do, inspired by Oasis, but I looked more like Austin Powers.
College is a great time to experiment with what you like, and your taste will likely vary from year to year.

That being said, I would advise guys to take working out seriously. If you are in great shape and take care of yourself, pretty much anything you wear will look at least decent.
And stay the hell away from square-toe dress shoes!

“There’s plenty of time to dress ‘mature'”

Peter Nguyen (menswear blogger and stylist, The Essential Man)

the essential man
My style in college was all over the place. I was trying really hard to impress people, so I wore a ton of trends even though they didn’t make sense together. One day you’d find me in all black clothes, another day I’d be wearing a Saved by the Bell graphic tee and thrift store bomber.
Since then I’ve learned to wear things because I like them and not worry about what others might think.  I shifted my focus on more timeless staples. Classics. I’ve also learned that you can mix in trends here and there to make it less boring without going overboard.

My advice to guys in college now is to enjoy your youth. Don’t be afraid to try different styles and trends out! That’s how you find a style that clicks with you. There’s plenty of time to dress “mature.”
