Billed as the “Fight of the Century,” most assumed that tickets toFloyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor on August 26 would sell out instantly. With the jostle less than a month away, ESPN now reports that, in fact, the opposite is true.
An online check on Saturday showed that literally hundreds of seats in the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, were still available to cop from Ticketmaster. The article continues that fans would be able to purchase six tickets together in 162 different spots throughout the venue.
There is a logical reason as to why, though: pricing. The cheapest ticket in the venue comes in at an exorbitant $3,500 — not withstanding another $300 in buyer fees — and climbs to $10,000. The resale market is just as expensive, with the original $500 tickets now selling for around $2,000.
“There’s fairly little sales going on in general,” said Chris Leyden, a content analyst for SeatGeek.com. “I think a lot of it has to do with where prices are now. I think people are a little uncomfortable paying this much or maybe even more.”
Fight promoter, Leonard Ellerbe, appeared unphased at current sales, however. He told AP that he still expects the fight to not only sell out but also smash box office records.
