How Diego Costa went from the leading striker in a title-winning side to exiled in Brazil is a curious story.
The Brazilian-born Spanish international scored 20 goals last season en route to the Blues lifting the Premier League crown for the second time in three years.
However, boss Antonio Conte texted him earlier this summer to inform his striker that he is no longer in his plans.
As a result, Costa has been seeking a complicated move back to Atletico Madrid - who cannot register new players until January 1 2018 - and he has refused to comply with the club's wishes to train away from the first team.
Costa admits to a bust-up with Conte in January, an incident he believes led to the Italian sabotaging a new contract that has previously been on the table.
So how did he react to Chelsea's opening day defeat to Burnley at Stamford Bridge? In an extensive interview with Adam Crafton, Costa shared his feelings as the game transpired.
"It's going well for Chelsea, isn't it?" Costa grimaced at the 3-0 half-time score. "The red card changed the game but anyway, you've come a long way and I have nothing to hide. Come on in."
As the final moments of Chelsea's 3-2 defeat by Burnley played out, his father, Zeinha, peeks his head around the door. Zeinha shakes his head at the Chelsea score, prompting Costa to say: "They are two players down, to be fair, Dad."
