Nepal arrests 71 men for harassing women riding public transport

Police nab 3 kidnappers, rescue 4 victims in Kogi
Police in Nepal have arrested 71 men within a month for sexually harassing women on public buses, Officials said on Thursday.
A month ago, police in Kathmandu launched the Safety Pin campaign, sending dozens of plain-cloth police officers in 33 groups to investigate harassment on public transport.
The officers rode buses to investigate the sexual abuse of women and children, the Nepal Police said in a statement on Thursday.
“We have registered cases against 24 and released 47 others with warnings,’’ the police said in the statement.
Most of the offenders were of between 15 and 25 years of age.
“This campaign will continue for two more months,’’ the police said.
The crackdown on sexual harassment was launched after women’s rights activists complained.
Most victims refrain from speaking out against the abuses due to social stigma.
A World Bank report published in 2014 found that one in four women aged 19 to 35 felt insecure during their commuting in 2013.
More than half of the women surveyed said they avoided standing near middle-aged men. (dpa/NAN)
