IN WHAT could be described
as the mother of all protests, the
National Union of Local Government
Employees, NULGE, in collaboration
with the Nigeria Labour Congress,
NLC, and Trade Union Congress,
TUC, yesterday, grounded economic
activities in Kaduna State.
The protesters marched from the state
NLC office along Independence way to
the House of Assembly premises, with
an unprecedented crowd chanting ‘El-
Rufai must go’, ‘we’re tired of him’
among others”.
Efforts by a detachment of policemen
and the army to frustrate the protest
failed.
The gate of the House of Assembly
was forced open by the protesters
who headed straight for the Assembly
chambers.
No casualty was recorded as at the
time of going to press.
While addressing members, the
National President, NLC, Ayuba
Wabba, condemned the governor for
sacking almost 22,000 teachers.
He noted that sacking workers is
inhuman and that it affects the family,
attributing the growing incidence
of crimes along the Kaduna-Abuja
expressway to joblessness.
Wabba added that the next time that
the union will organise a protest in
Kaduna, members will be instructed to
come out with their families, mat, and
mattresses.
“Teachers have a registration council
charged with the responsibility of
screening them”, saying El-Rufai is
using the incident as a smokescreen to
tell the world that teachers failed an
examination.’’
The joint unions had earlier
scheduled Wednesday, November 8 to
embark on a protest if there is no last
minute change of plans on the sacked
teachers by El-Rufai.
It was gathered from a reliable source
last Monday that the national leaders
of NULGE were already in Kaduna and
had finalised plans for a showdown
with the state government.
It would be recalled that NULGE,
recently, issued a communiqué were
it frowned at the planned downsizing
of the workforce in local government
areas in Kaduna State.
Also two days ago, the state
government issued a statement
reminding residents that the ban on
protests and processions was still in
place.
