Aisha Buhari laments maternal/ child death in Nigeria

WIFE of the President, Aisha Buhari
has described the current statistics
of malnutrition and maternal and
child mortality in the nation as
disheartening.
She said that the situation whereby
the nation records 120 deaths per
1000 live birth is unacceptable and
needs to be addressed.
The President’s Wife stated this
while declaring a three day seminar
on Reproductive Maternal, Child,
Adolescent Health and Nutrition
(RMNCAH+N)for Wives of
Governors from the North Central
zone in support of the Future
Assured Programme of the Wife of
the President in Minna, Niger state.
It would be recalled that UNICEF
recent data showef that malnutrition
was the highest contributor to
under five and maternal mortality
rate in the world.
According to her, the report also
indicated that Nigeria contributes
nearly 10 per cent of new born
deaths across the world.
Aisha Buhari who was
represented by the former deputy
Governor of Plateau state, Chief
Pauline Tallen, stressed on the need
for wives of governors across the
nation to find ground to address
maternal and child mortality in
their states.
She stated that championing the
commitment of Maternal, Child,
Adolescent Health and Nutrition
(RMNCAH+N) in the states will
be a significant milestone towards
reducing the high mortality of
women and children in the nation.
“Your Excellencies, except
everyone of us takes responsibility
and strategic action to address these
issues in our immediate regions,
they may remain unchanged and
even grow worse. We believe that
this workshop will equip you with
the necessary tools to achieve your
objectives of securing the future for
women and children. “
In her address, the Wife of the
Niger state Governor, Dr. Amina
Abubakar Bello said that wives of
Governors across the nation have
taken it as a moral cause to support
the government in reducing the
high rate of death caused by
preventable and curable diseases.
Supporting the Future Assured
Initiative of the Aisha Buhari
Foundation, she said that the
vision of wives of the governors is
to ensure that no woman dies from
pregnancy related causes and to
create awareness and opportunity
for women and girls to realize their
full potential in an environment that
is safe for pregnancy and childbirth.
“This state level advocacy for
mobilizing wives of the North
Central state governors, alongside
technical officers and other
stakeholders on Reproductive,
Maternal, Child, Adolescent
Health and Nutrition engagement
is apt and requires all the support
and commitment we can give as
individuals and as a group towards
championing the advocacy in our
states. “
