Ajimobi inaugurates Oluyole-Apata road

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Thursday in Ibadan inaugurated the 5.5km Mobil-Oluyole- Apata Road and bridge.

The reconstruction of the road was awarded to M/S Adold Engineering Development Company Ltd in March 2015 at a cost of N2.23 billion.

Ajimobi said the completion of the project was another fulfillment of his administration’s promise to decongest roads and ease intra-city transportation.

“I am highly elated that we are able to convert our dreams into reality. We are building road networks because they are important for socio-economic development,’’ he said.

The governor said that his administration had constructed several roads in Ibadan including Challenge-Toll Gate, Challenge-New Garage, Eleyele-Dugbe- Jericho- Aleshinloye, Iseyin and Ogbomoso.

He said the Idi Ape- Bashorun-Akobo Ojurin, Ologuneru-Eleyele, Oke Adu-Iwo road, Gate-Adegbayi, Challenge-Orita Challenge-New Garage, Saki- Ilesha-Ibaruba roads were undergoing reconstruction, dualisation and expansion.

“As we are doing these, we have been witnessing massive arrival of foreign investors in the state. We must develop Ibadan and Oyo State,” he said, commending residents and commuters for enduring the pains of reconstruction.

Mr. Wasiu Dauda, the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, said the road which has pedestrian walkway and a three-span bridge over Alaro river, had considerably reduced travel time and raised the values of properties in the area.

In his remarks, Oba Lekan Balogun, Otun-Olubadan, one of the 21 newly inaugurated traditional rulers, commended the governor for the execution of the project, describing him as a builder.

Mr. Gbenga Opaleye, the Caretaker Chairman, Ibadan South-West Local Government, also thanked the governor for reconstructing the road.

McGregor 'proud' of pro boxing debut, despite defeat

Mayweather knocks out McGregor

Conor McGregor says he is “proud” of what he achieved on his professional boxing debut, despite being stopped in the 10th round by Floyd Mayweather.

The UFC lightweight champion, 29, lost a much-hyped fight as 40-year-old Mayweather took his perfect career record to 50-0 in Las Vegas.

BBC Sports reports that the build-up was dominated by heated exchanges, but McGregor said the American, who came out of retirement for the fight, “won hands down”.

“Floyd is a heck of a boxer,” he said.

“His experience, his patience and his endurance won him this fight hands down.

“I always told him he was not a fighter but a boxer. But sharing the ring with him, he is certainly a solid fighter. Strong in the clinch. Great understanding of frames and head position.

“He has some very strong tools he could bring into an MMA game for sure.”

McGregor spent 10 weeks in a training camp prior to the bout, but the Irishman says he could have gone the distance with more preparation time.

“Getting to 12 rounds alone in practice was always the challenge,” he said.

“If I began with a loaded 12 rounds under much stress I would have only hit a brick wall and lost progress as a result and potentially not made the fight.

“A little more time and we could have made the 12 cleanly, while under more stress, and made it through the later rounds in the actual fight.”

However, McGregor says every decision made in his training camp “was correct” as he made it past the 25-minute mark in a fight for the first time.

“I am proud of everyone of my team for what we did in the short time that we did it,” added McGregor on Instagram.

“I am happy for the experience and happy to take all these great lessons with me and implement them into my camp going forward.”

Adeosun reveals how FG contractors evade tax

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun has accused some contractors of the federal government and their agencies of evading tax.

Adeosun, who made this revelation via a statement issued on Wednesday, said the development was discovered following the sampling exercise carried out by the ministry of finance.

She said the federal government had started reviewing the tax compliance records of contractors who have received payments from the federal government and its agencies in the last seven years.

“It was a matter of concern that those who earned money directly from government, which is both traceable and verifiable, still failed to pay the correct taxes thereon,” she said.

According to the statement, the ministry of finance and office of the accountant general of the federation are now compiling records of all payments exceeding N100m made in the last seven years including details of the beneficiary bank accounts.

The statement further added that “all agencies have 30 days to return the information on payments made, and accounting officers are required to certify the accuracy of the data supplied. Deliberate omission or manipulation of data by accounting officers will attract sanction”.

It said a database project called Project Light House, which would build comprehensive profiles of tax payers using bank verification numbers, foreign exchange allocations, land registry records and information obtained from foreign governments, has commenced.

The minister said the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is committed to improving tax compliance as this is related to efforts being made to reduce dependence on oil.

Why Thomas Lemar turned down deadline day move to Arsenal

Monaco winger, Thomas Lemar, rejected a move to Arsenal on transfer deadline, because he was not keen on playing in the Europa League.

The Gunners finished fifth last season and will not be playing in the Champions League for the first time in two decides.

And according to Standard Sport, this proved to be a stumbling block as they tried to wrap up a deal for Lemar on Thursday.

The 21-year-old has been Arsene Wenger’s number one target all summer and at least three bids have turned down by the Ligue 1 champions for the player.

However, Wenger made one final push, after they agreed to sell Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City for £60million, offering £75million plus add-ons for Lemar.

World Cup qualifying: Syria beat Qatar to keep hopes alive

Syria play their home matches in Malaysia

Syria earned a vital 3-1 win against Qatar to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for a first ever World Cup.

Omar Kharbin scored in each half and Mahmoud Al-Mawas added a third in injury time as Syria moved above Uzbekistan into third in their group.

The top two teams qualify automatically for the 2018 World Cup in Russia while the third-placed side face a play-off.

Defeat for Qatar means they cannot qualify and will make their World Cup debut as the host nation in 2022.

Syria play group winners Iran in Tehran in their final group match on Tuesday and will be guaranteed a two-legged play-off against the third-place team in Group B with victory.

But they could yet finish second and qualify directly for next year's tournament depending on the result of the match between South Korea and Uzbekistan.

South Korea could only manage a goalless draw against 10-man Iran on Thursday and defeat in their final match could see them fail to qualify for the finals for the first time since 1982 should Syria beat Iran.

China could also still take third place and a play-off spot if they beat Qatar in Doha on Tuesday and other results go their way.

Meanwhile, in Group B, Japan beat Australia to qualify for their sixth successive World Cup.

Ian Wright blasts Arsenal for not selling Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City

Former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, has criticized manager Arsene Wenger and the club, for keeping Alexis Sanchez in the final year of his contract.

According to the UK Guardian, the Gunners accepted City’s second bid of £55m plus £5m in add-ons on Thursday, but the deal could only be ratified if Arsene Wenger brought in a new attacking player.

Monaco’s Thomas Lemar was one of the replacements targeted, while the other was Paris Saint-Germain’s Julian Draxler.

Arsenal initially agreed to pay the £92m Monaco demanded for the 21-year-old, but there appears to be insufficient time for them to agree a package with Lemar, who is in the France squad for this evening’s game against Holland.

This means that Sanchez, who was clearly desperate to leave the Emirates, will now have to stay put for the year of his contract.

“It’s bad business to let Sanchez walk out next year for free.Take the F*****g money! He don’t want to be there! We’re Arsenal so some pride,” Wright tweeted on Thursday.

PSG signs £160m-rated Mbappe on loan from Monaco

Mbappe

Paris St-Germain, PSG, have signed £160m-rated forward Kylian Mbappe on a season-long loan from Monaco.

Acording to BBC Sports, the loan agreement includes an option for PSG to sign the France international on a permanent deal until June 2022.

Any deal for the 18-year-old is likely to be eclipsed only by the 222m euros (£200m) PSG paid for Neymar.

“I really wanted to be a part of the club’s project, which is one of the most ambitious in Europe,” said Mbappe.

The delay in signing Mbappe permanently is reported to be so PSG can comply with Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of PSG, added: “It was essential for French football that we keep and help develop such a great talent in our championship.

“Among players of his age, he is without doubt the most promising in the world due to his immense technical, physical and mental qualities.

“Since his emergence at the highest level, he has earned an excellent reputation as a young talent who is very respectful, open, ambitious and already very mature.”

ASUU Strike: Federal Govt appoints Osinbajo as "Chief Negotiator"

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Acting President. Chief Negotiator, ASUU Strike

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has assigned Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to henceforth chair the concluding part of the ongoing negotiation between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU, an umbrella association of lecturers in the nation’s universities, is demanding the full implementation of the 2009 agreements reached with the federal government bordering on improvement in welfare and payment of backlog of salaries and entitlements, among other issues.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, confirmed this development while fielding questions from State House correspondents after the meeting of the FEC in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ngige stated that this was part of the council’s resolutions at the meeting which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, his first meeting with all the members of the cabinet, since his return from medical vacation on August 19.

“This is the first national strike that this government is facing and we want to discuss.

“At council today, the Vice President has taken over some of the aspects of the negotiations and discussions.

“So, we are continuing the meeting in his office and when we finish meeting, we will get back to ASUU for another round of meeting and we are hopeful that we will be able to go to an appreciable extent to solve some of the outstanding issues that is preventing them from going back to work,’’ he said.

On the national minimum wage committee, the minister stated that the federal government team was ready for the commencement of negotiation with the labour unions and other stakeholders.

He said already four ministers, Head of Service of the Federation and the acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation had been appointed to be part of the government team.

“The chairman will be unveiled when we have full component of the committee. The aspect that is delaying from inaugurating the committee is the organised private sector.

“The organised private sector has eight representatives of which Nigeria Employers Committee Assembly has four nominations and they have not sent their nominations.

“Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has two nominations, their nominations just came in yesterday. Nigeria Association of Small Medium Enterprise has one, they have not sent in their nomination.

“NACCIMA has not sent in their nominations. So we are waiting for these nominations, when they come in the government will nominate the chairman and inaugurate the committee,’’ he explained.

EFCC recovers N409 billion in eight month

Mr Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, between January and August 2017 recovered about N409 billion and secured 137 convictions nationwide, the acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu said today.

He spoke at an interactive meeting with media executives that held in Abuja.

“Between January and August 30, 2017, the EFCC recovered N409,270,706,686.75; $69,501,156.67; 231,118.69 Pounds; 610,816.20 Euros; Dirham 443,400.00 and 70,500.00 Saudi Riyal,” he said.

“Over a month ago, the Commission recovered over N329billion from a group of oil marketers for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.”

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the session, which provided media editors from the print, online and broadcast media platforms, an avenue to engage with the EFCC boss, was also utilized by Magu, to intimate them of the resolve to remain unrelenting in the fight against corruption.

“In the area of prosecution of cases in court, we are also making progress despite the antics of some persons accused of grand corruption to delay trial,” Magu said.

He urged media men to see themselves as partners in progress, noting that the EFCC could not alone win the war against corruption.

“From what we read in the papers these days, it is either somebody is fighting Magu or Magu is fighting other people,” he said, adding that it was obvious journalists want to sell their newspapers.

“But seriously speaking, instead of fighting ourselves, we should be united in fighting the common enemy, which is corruption,” he stressed.

Magu used the opportunity to stress that he had no personal grouse with anyone, explaining that “I am not after anybody and have no issues with anybody. Those who think they have issues with me will soon discover that I mean no harm”.

“What drives me is the passion to do what is right by ensuring that we fight corruption to a standstill in this country.”

He further gave assurance that the EFCC will not rest on its oars, noting that, “We believe there is still a lot to be done which is the reason why we are actively seeking the support of all stakeholders, including the media.”

The Police Service Commission (PSC), has invited Senator Isah Misau, Chairman Senate Committee on Navy, to appear before its Special Panel investigating allegations of special promotions in the Nigeria Police Force.

The senator is expected to appear before the panel on Sept 6.

The Nigeria Police Force on August 27, declared Misau a deserter and accused him of carrying a forged retirement letter.

Senator Misau had, in series of interviews with newsmen, accused the Inspector General of Police of taking bribe to post police officers as well as diverting money paid by private companies for police duties.

The Head, Press and Public Relations of the commission, Ikechukwu Ani, announced n a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, that the invitation letter was signed by the Chairman of the Special Panel , retired Justice O. Adekeye.

He said that the commission received correspondence from the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Panel (SIP)on Aug. 24 relating to Misau’s retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Police Service Commission, the only organ saddled with the statutory responsibility of issuing letters of retirement to all Police Officers except the IGP, has a vital role to play in determining the authenticity of this letter,” he said.

EGCC officials undergoing trial for corruption - Magu

The Acting Chairman of the commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, disclosed this at an interactive session with Editors in Abuja on Wednesday.

Magu, who did not immediately give the number of the affected officials, said he would not condone any act of corruption in the agency.

“Recently, we had to discharge about nine cadet officers because they have problem with their certificates from various institutions.

“We are also prosecuting a lot of officers. Some of them are already in court.

“There is a way you can help us. Just like you can help us with information regarding corrupt practices outside the EFCC, and proceeds of corruption, you can also assist in giving us the information.

“But, I assure you, I do not tolerate, I won’t condone any act of corruption in the EFCC.

“I cannot be everywhere but I am telling you I don’t spare any allegation no matter how little, we make sure we investigate.

He reiterated his call for concerted efforts by all stakeholders, especially the media, in the fight.

”Nobody will claim ownership, nobody has a better knowledge than the other person, nobody has a monopoly of knowledge in the fight against corruption.

“We need everybody on board now that the fight against corruption is getting tougher. I have been in this business for a very long time; it has never been this tough like now.

“Some of us feel that it is our generation that caused corruption. So, we have a responsibility to clear the debt.

“Please don’t get tired because it is about Nigeria, it is not about individuals. All of us have a responsibility to God Almighty to fight corruption.

“Let us double our efforts. From the way we are going, they have already failed. It is almost half won, but we must sustain the momentum.’’

Mimiko left over N220bn debt - Akeredolu

Rotimi Akeredolu, Ondo State Governor

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State says his administration inherited a debt burden of N220.58bn at its inception.

Akeredolu made this known in Akure on Wednesday while swearing-in commissioners and special advisers. He advised the people of the state to refrain from acts that could further push the state into deep economic crisis.

But his claim about the debt legacy was promptly attacked by a former commissioner for Information during the Mimiko administration, Mr Kayode Akinmade, who said that Mimiko left N20 billion in the kitty of the state government.

Akinmade skirted the issue of debt and also did not explain why Mimiko failed to match the N38.64 billion left in the kitty of the state government by his predecessor, Governor Olusegun Agagu.

Akeredolu said with a debt of more than N220 billion, it was not difficult for anyone to know that the government’s capacity for adjustment to cater for the people had been stretched to its limit.

According to him Internal Debt of N53.15billion constituted almost a quarter of the debt legacy.

Others are External Debt, N17.48billion; Unpaid Salaries and Allowances, Aug. to Dec. 2016, N17.27billion; and Jan. to Feb. 2017, N6,91billion, Ondo State Pension Liabilities, N4.80billion; Ondo State Gratuity, N15.04billion; Unpaid Local Government Salaries and Allowances Aug. to Dec. 2016, N9.3billion; Jan. to Feb. 2017, N5.19billion.

Local Government Pension Liabilities of N25.23billion; Local Government Gratuities N20.96billion; Contractors’ Liabilities N39.74billion; Outstanding payment requests in the Office of the Accountant-General without cash backing, N5.45billion made up the rest of the debt profile.

However, Akeredolu promised to provide the needed leadership to move the state forward and make life more abundant for the people.

“We will continue to strive to keep that vow within the available resources. We can turn things around positively,’’ he said.

The governor also congratulated the commissioners and special assistants, adding that they should use this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people.

Mr Femi Agagu, who spoke on behalf of other commissioners, thanked the governor for the privilege given them to serve the people.

“We are aware that your administration has a blueprint to transform the state. Collectively, we will take the state to a glorious destination.

“We pledge to discharge our duties faithfully and with the fear of God. We will defend the oath we have sworn to and we will uphold this honour you have bestowed on us,” Agagu said.

The commissioners are Mr Taofiq Abdusallam, Mr Rasheed Badmus, Mr Solagbade Amodeni, Chief Adegboyega Adefarati, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, Mrs Omowumi Olatunji, Mr Donald Ojogo, Mr Yemi Olowolabi and Dr Wahab Adegbenro.

Others are; Mr Funso Esan, Mr Wale Akinterinwa, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan, Alhaji Olurimisi Ismaila, Mr Femi Agagu, Prof. Bayonle Ademodi, Mrs Julianah Fagbemi, Mr Timilehin Adelegbe and Mr Kola Olawole.

Why President Buhari's fight against corruption is not yielding result - Wike

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has blamed the ineffectiveness of President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption on the inability of national institutions to act independently.

Governor Wike spoke during a courtesy visit by officials of Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs, UK, to Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday.

Wike noted that “political influence has weakened the fight against corruption. It is difficult to fight corruption when the institutions are weak.

“Claiming to fight corruption with weak institutions may just be a political ploy to attract sympathy from western countries.”

Earlier, Manager of the Africa Programme at Chatham House, Tighisti Amare, invited Wike to the institute to deliver a keynote address on developmental issues, which he accepted.

It could be recalled that Social rights organization, the Integrity Group issued a two-week ultimatum to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice

Walter Onnoghen to resign his position for hobnobbing with Governor Wike despite his many “corrupt” activities

The group is also demanding the investigation of Justice Onnoghen for allegedly violating his oath of office.

The Integrity Group in a petition signed by its Executive Director, Livingstone Wechie to the National Judicial Council, NJC accused Onnoghen of particularly.

No matter how much time you’ve invested, no matter the use of media to silence & manipulate, no matter the circumstance, slander, embarrassment, threats and lies: Get out and seek immediate help!

“We have got to stop this culture of shaming and vilifying women with false stories of infidelity & nefarious behavior. The spreading of false information (through “sources” afraid to be identified) is the mark of cowards and a cover up for guilty parties to justify their horrific actions. There is absolutely no truth to the media circulated lies of infidelity and infertility- on my end.

“We’ve seen this movie before. Women being dragged in the press & blamed for everything under the sun. This behavior is unacceptable. I urge those involved to be mindful of their actions for the eyes of our Almighty God are always watching. The seeds of slander is a cancer that harvests to eat away the souls of the planter.

“The throne is sacred and the attempts to tarnish the name of a Queen, in defense or on behalf of a silent King makes all involved look terrible. Remain dignified in all you do. It’s not the end of the world, but the start of a new chapter and you must turn the page with grace. The world is watching.

“As I bid adieu to this chapter, my wish to you all is to step into your lives – boldly & fearlessly, the way God intended and live not just by words, but through example. The best chapter in our lives is the one we are writing now. Thank you for your love and support.

With peace, love & light, -Her Highness, Zaynab Otiti Obanor.”

Five allegedly murdered in Cross River as cultists clash

In a renewed cult clash between Vikings and Skylow members in Calabar, Cross River State capital, about five suspected cult members have been reportedly killed. One of the victims gunned down was said to be an aspirant contesting for the position of a Councillor in ward 8 in Calabar South Local Government Area.

The aspirant, whose name was given as Mr. Mesembe and a strong contender was killed in the night of Monday at Eyo Ita Street, close to Edibe Edible, a witness told DAILY POST.

“He met his death after he was caught in-between fire exchange by Vikings and Skylow members,” he said.

“Vikings and Skylow had mobilised for a hit and run and when they could not find the person wanted but spotted Mesembe and after a shout from one of them that he was the one, he was shot and cut with machetes several times,” an eyewitness said.

His death came after a fight between the Skylow and Scorpion gangs on Sunday night led to the death of a Scorpion member in Ekpo Abasi. Sources hinted that the Skylow planned a reprisal for the Scorpion gang who had killed about four of their members.

On Sunday night, the gang planned to hit Scorpion members around Mayne Avenue, Ekpo Abasi and Anantigha axis where three teams were waiting and ambushed fleeing Scorpion member. It was gathered that the recent war is connected to the killing of one Ecomoc in June.

He was allegedly killed due to ticketing competition between gang groups when government officials in the state indirectly recruited them through phoney companies serving as revenue collection agencies.

Sadly, other suspected cult members were reportedly killed along Ekpo Abasi and Mbukpa street, all in Calabar South Local Government Area. Residents in the area now close shops as early as 6pm while other members of the public desert the road as early as 7pm.

When DAILY POST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Ms Irene Ugbo, she confirmed the clash but said only one person was killed and investigations was on going, “I can authoritatively inform you that the clash was between Scorpion and Skylow and only one person was killed,” she stated.

What I would do to Mesut Ozil if I were Arsene Wenger - Emmanuel Petit

France and Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit, has advised the club’s manager, Arsene Wenger to sign Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez and allow the “nonchalant” Mesut Ozil to leave.

26-year-old Mahrez has made little secret of his desire to leave Leicester City.

Petit spoke to SFR Sports, saying that the Algeria international would give the Gunners the cutting edge they need.

He said, “He knows the Premier League by heart, and has an incredible impact in it.

“He’s the kind of player cruelly lacking for Arsenal down the right.

“I say stop focusing on the problems at the back. I’m among those who think the further away the ball is from your goal, the less chance you have of conceding a goal. And the more players you have who are capable of holding on to the ball… How many players are there in world football of that profile?

“If I were a coach I’d love to have dribblers in my team — quick, technically good, capable of saying [to a defender], ‘I’m going to humiliate you with two feints, two step-overs.’

“There aren’t many dribblers. Arsenal only have one, that’s Alexis Sanchez. They have a lot of guys who run quickly, but they run in a straight line.

“It’s been a while since he [Ozil] played a good game, and even longer since he put a string of good performances together.

“He’s still able to put in one good performance, but good performances over three, four, five weeks… I don’t think we’ll see Ozil at that level again.

“What disappoints me most is his attitude, his defeatist attitude on the pitch, his nonchalance that transmits to his teammates. Arsene keeps him on the pitch. If I were the coach, I’d say, ‘Mesut, you want to leave? There’s the door. Be sure to close it on the way out.’ If I were Arsene Wenger, I’d say, ‘Get out.'”

Buhari has started restructuring Nigeria - Lai Mohammed

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government says it has commenced the process of restructuring.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed made the disclosure on Tuesday while featuring on Channels television.

The Minister revealed that the Federal Government is restructuring the country through power devolution.

Mohammed noted that restructuring to the Federal Government means its policies being felt by those at the grassroot and this has been happening.

He cited the directive by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo that Police should commence community policing among others.

According to Mohammed, “For the Federal Government restructuring means devolution of power.

“Restructuring means for the Federal Government a system whereby government’s policies and programmes can reach everybody at the grassroots.

“For us, restructuring means ability that will allow you to deliver and in our own way, we have started.

“The Acting President (then) issued an order to the police that they should start implementing community policing; that is one aspect of restructuring that we believe will deliver better criminal justice.

“We as a government we look at our constitution as it is today and we follow strictly what the constitution says, and in applying the constitution we look at practical ways of reaching out to people.

“The constitution is the grundnorm today, that is the basis of our being together and you cannot today as a government do anything that is contrary to that Constitution because that is the supreme law of the country.

“So, even when you talk about restructuring you may need to amend certain provisions of the constitution, and we all know how cumbersome it is to do that.

“But we are not averse to genuine grievances, we are ready to look at them, but what the government cannot do is to react to the cacophony of voices.“

Malawi vs EFCC: SGF sets up centre for criminal prosecutions

One week after the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), publicly accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, of frustrating the anti-graft war, the AGF has announced plans to create a central body that will coordinate all criminal prosecutions in the country.

Recall that Malami stated that Magu and the EFCC leadership have “manipulated and misused intelligence to the detriment of the fight against corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.”

“The EFCC is now in a state of paranoia, as it dreads the effort of the government to have an independent NFIU, which it has stood against stoically since 2006.

“As it presently stands, the NFIU staff are all deployed by the EFCC to serve in the interest of whoever is its current Chairman. This has to stop if it must conform to the new thinking and global best practice. Nigeria cannot be an island of its own. It cannot fight corruption in isolation”, he said.

On Tuesday, Malami revealed the policy reforms that will give his office more powers over EFCC, while presenting the ministry’s report for 2016-2017 legal year.

The new body, to be inaugurated in October, will comprise a Coordinating Centre for all federal government criminal justice agencies as well as an investigation unit.

The minister said the coordinating centre has become “eminently necessary” because of lack of effective cooperation and collaboration among the criminal justice and security agencies in Nigeria.

The said the centre will “Promote and enhance quick and easy coordination of all federal criminal cases within the Federal Republic of Nigeria;

“Enable the Office of the HAGF to checkmate abuse and or proliferation of criminal cases in Nigeria;

“Facilitate centralization and easy access to information for a robust and effective criminal justice system in Nigeria;

“Address such anomalies that leads to consistent rejection of vital/relevant evidence in the course of prosecution;

*Whittle down of the probative value of such evidence owing to inappropriate investigation.”

The unit, he said, shall coordinate and form part of every investigation in Nigeria for a robust investigation and successful prosecution of such cases.

The core function/mandate of the Investigation Unit shall consist of the following:

“To advise every security agency carrying out investigation on the best lawful and admissible means of such investigation for effective prosecution thereafter;

“To actively form part of every sensitive and important investigation, as a synergy to successful investigation and prosecution of such cases;

“To ensure that every evidence obtained maintain the nature, value and form admissible in law court;

“To ensure that every investigation is comprehensibly and conclusively conducted;

Agencies that will come under the supervision of the coordinating centre include Department of State Services (DSS); Nigeria Police Force (NPF); the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC); the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Others are the National Agency for the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP); the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA); the Directorate Military Investigation (DMI); and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Minimum wage: TUC condemns Osinbajo's comment, warns Nigerian govt

The Trade Union Congress, TUC, has condemned the comment by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, that a new minimum wage will be selectively implemented.

TUC warned Nigerian government that the move would be as retrogressive, describing it as unacceptable.

Osinbajo had disclosed that the administration was considering increasing the remuneration package, especially bonuses of certain government agencies, instead of reviewing wages across board.

He spoke during a session titled, “Conversation with the Vice-President” at the 2017 Nigerian Bar Association National Conference held in Lagos last Monday.”

“I think that what we are probably going to end up doing is what we have done with some of the parastatals; in other words, identifying certain government services that must be remunerated differently in order to increase efficiency”, he said.

Reacting, TUC President, Mr. Bobboi Bala-Kaigama, said: “NEC-in-session kicks against it and demands that the minimum wage implementation should be holistic and not selective. Minimum wage is for all and remains and should remain in the exclusive list.

“Furthermore, we condemn the delay to constitute the 29-member committee for National Minimum Wage for the country months after it was announced.

“We call on the Federal Government not to task the patience of workers beyond limit as the current wage structure is no longer tenable, when viewed against the economic realities on ground.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has submitted the names of its nominees for the 29 man-committee for the negotiation of the new national minimum wage.

It would be recalled that the Federal Executive Council had on May 25 approved the constitution of the National Minimum Wage Committee to kick-start the process of negotiations for new wage for workers.
